Spring Meeting Attendance

Hello All,
Just to keep you updated, the first two spring meetings have been added to the PIAA website. I should have the last one submitted the last week of September. I will send out one final notification to let you know when they have all been submitted.

Also, while going through the list of chapter members, many of you only have between zero (0) and two (2) meetings to date. Don’t wait until the last minute to get all your meetings in. And remember, if you do not meet the required six (6) meetings, you could face suspension at the end of the season.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks!
Milan

Meeting Attendance Update

Hello All,

Within the last few weeks I have received several inquiries about chapter member’s attendance, and the PIAA website not matching up with what each member believes it should be. Just as a friendly reminder, the PIAA’s website does not refresh itself for the 2018-2019 season until this August. That means if I submit the three (3) meetings that were held in February, March, and April, they will count toward the 2017-2018 season, and be cleared out come August when they refresh the website. That being said, come August your attendance can then be submitted to the PIAA and reflect your attendance during the boy’s season. At that time your attendance on the PIAA website will be up to date. If you are unsure of your attendance before then, send me an email and I will give you an update.

Thank you very much,

Milan

Rule 8 – The Serve – Articles 6, 7, 8 Review

GTCCVO High School Officials:  This is being posted to hopefully CLEAR-UP any misinterpretation regarding an ILLEGAL serve versus a service FAULT.
Per Rule 8, Section 2, Article 5:  A serve is ILLEGAL and the ball REMAINS DEAD [these are the operative words] if the server:
six (6) things can happen which defines an ILLEGAL serve from hitting the ball illegally (using two hands for example, etc.) to releasing the ball for service, then catching it or letting it hit the floor more than once during ONE TERM of service.
PLEASE GO TO YOUR RULE BOOK, pages 32 and 33, TO REVIEW THESE 6 THINGS

When any of those 6 things happen, loss of rally/point is awarded to the RECEIVNG TEAM (irrespective if the RECEIVING TEAM is out of position).

Per Rule 8, Section 2, Article 6:  A (legally) served ball is a SERVICE FAULT and BECOMES DEAD (operative words) when the ball:
four (4) things can happen, all which mention the flight of the served ball or the toss of the service ball hitting a backboard or support hanging in a verticle position over the serving area.

For the RECEIVING TEAM being out of position when there is a SERVICE FAULT, a point is awarded to the SERVING TEAM

Article 7 is pretty clear:……….When a Receiving Team player is out of position on the service and:
a.   The ball is served ILLEGALLY [ see Article 5]  , the serving team is penalized
b.   A SERVICE FAULT [ see Article 6 ] occurs, the receiving team is penalized

If you remember that the serving team has to serve legally before it can get a point, you’re ahead of the game!

Legendary Farrell coach Morrison dies at 74

I am sad to announce the passing of Harriett Morrison. As someone who has been around the game of volleyball for a long time both as a coach and official, I can honestly say that I have never met a finer human being. Although Harriett may be a legendary volleyball coach, her contributions to the lives of countless young people is a far bigger accomplishment.

(The Obituary below is from The Sharon Herald.)

(However, I would challenge you to use this link to view a Post-Gazette article from 2004 that so much better describes the true Harriett Morrison)

Harriett Morrison, who built the Farrell High girls volleyball team into a perennial powerhouse, died on Thursday at the age of 74.

The 1962 Mercer High graduate obtained a bachelors degree in Health and Physical Education from Slippery Rock University in 1966. Her first and only teaching job was at Farrell High School where she was employed until her retirement in June of 2005.
Morrison led her Farell High girls volleyball teams to eight state championships and five runners-up finishes. Her teams made 22 consecutive PIAA tourney appearances and had five perfect seasons. Her teams captured 20 WPIAL titles and her career coaching record was 554-59.

Morrison has been inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. She was also a finalist for the Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year.
