PIAA update on mask mandate

The PIAA sent the following email today. Please note, the mask mandate is up to the individual school, so check with the school as stated below. Also, check with your partner to see if they are comfortable if you decide not to wear a mask. It may be a good idea to take your vaccination card with you, if you plan on not wearing your mask, but please be respectful of others when making your decision.

This email is being sent to all spring sports officials along with PIAA Statewide Interpreters and PIAA Officials’ Council. The PA Department of Health (DOH) last week accepted the guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in which fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear masks indoors or outdoors. The PA DOH has updated their position to include unless required by a business or organization, such as a school. The DOH press release dated May 14, 2021 is located here for your review: PA Department of Health Press Release.
PIAA requests registered sports officials to communicate with the host site, or schools, to exchange information on the expectations of mask wearing before you leave for a contest.
Any questions or concerns, please contact our officials department at your convenience.

Mid-season update

We are almost 1/2 through the spring volleyball season. A few things to keep in mind:

There have been some matches and tournaments canceled due to COVID issues with the schools. Please make sure you are checking your arbiter for any last minute updates and that you are checking in with the schools and your partner prior to your match. Our chapter is requiring that all officials wear masks and social distance while working your match. A mask must be worn entering the building, while communicating with coaches/players/other officials, and while officiating…even if you are vaccinated. 2nd…it has come to my attention that a school has a transgender player. As the official, you are not to question the coach and especially the player as to their eligibility to play. The AD’s must approve all players prior to the season, so there is no reason to ask. Just leave it alone. 3rd…Please do not touch a player in any way…we are suppose to be social distancing, so there should be no reason to be close enough to a player to touch them. Good luck with the rest of the season. If you have any questions in regards to matches, please contact Matt Martin, our assignor. If you have any rule interpretation questions, please contact Greg Lockley or Joe Hardiman. Or you may reach out to me at any time for any other issues. Thank you
