In Memoriam – Jack Quinn (1929-2013)

 Jack A. “Coach” Quinn, 83, of Elderton, PA, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.


He was born May 11, 1929 in McKeesport, PA to Thomas H. and Evelyn C. (Hedman) Quinn.

Jack graduated from Glassport Jr.-Sr. High School in 1947. In 1951, he received his Bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State Teachers College and in 1955 earned his Master’s degree in Physical Education from Penn State University. Jack was a health and physical education teacher for 39 ½ years at Elderton High School until his retirement in 1991. During that time he coached basketball and baseball, and introduced and coached boys’ soccer and power volleyball. He also served as the athletic director for a 25 year period, and during that time wrestling was added to the school’s athletic program. He served as chairman of the now defunct Armstrong School District Athletic Committee for four years, and in 1971 was appointed a member of the WPIAL volleyball steering committee, serving as chairman from 1978 until 1990. From 1956 to 1966, Jack organized and conducted summer recreation programs for the Elderton schools.

He honorably served in the US Air Force and was a Korean War Veteran. He was an active member of Elderton Presbyterian Church, where he belonged to the choir. Jack also served as an ordained Elder, past Sunday school teacher, past youth advisor and president of the corporation of the church for 12 years. His other memberships included the Elderton American Legion Post #918, Phi Delta Kappa Education Fraternity, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association, National Federation Interscholastic Officials Association, Golden Triangle Officials Association and American Association of Retired Persons.

Jack loved living in the Elderton area and was extremely involved in the community. He served on the Elderton Borough Council for 26 years and was the Chairman of the Elderton/Plumcreek Area Recreation and Park Commission since its inception in 1971. He received many honors, awards and citations thanking him for his exemplary service to the community, which included the Pennsylvania Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Community Service in 1988, the Armstrong County Chamber of Commerce’s Distinguished Service Award in 1988, and a number of others from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and Senate.

Jack also received numerous local honors for his work in the community and the school. He received the Greater Kittanning Jaycees award for Outstanding Physical Fitness as part of their Man of the Year Award in 1972 and was inducted to the Western PA Sports Hall of Fame for volleyball in 1975. In 1980, he received an award for volleyball presented by Meadville High School and the Golden Triangle Officials chapter’s Al Arke Memorial Award. Jack was elected to the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association State Hall of Fame in 1994, and that same year received recognition for his vision and contribution to the sports complex at the Elderton/Plumcreek Park, which was named the “Jack Quinn Sports Complex.” To celebrate Jack’s outstanding contribution to the local volleyball program, he was inducted into the Armstrong County Sports Hall of Fame, Class of 1996.

His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean Eleanor (McBride) Quinn, whom he married August 2, 1951; children, Blythe Ann Johns and husband, Terry, of Ebensburg, Thomas Ralph Quinn and wife, Suzanne, of Elderton, and Sharron Leigh Finn and husband, John, of Wooster, OH; grandchildren; Kirsten Stiffler and husband, John, of Ebensburg, Nathan Johns and wife, Jennifer, of Elderton, Adam Quinn and wife, Ashley, of Kittanning, John Quinn and friend, Julie, of Indiana, PA, Patrick Finn and friend, Heather, of Philadelphia, and Shanna Hildebrandt and husband, Dan, of Wooster, OH; and great-grandchildren; Ayden and Gabriella Stiffler, Travis and Emily Johns, and Aaron Quinn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Friday, May 3, 2013 at the Clark Chapel of the Bauer Funeral Home, Inc., 238 Main Street, Elderton, PA.

Additional visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of funeral services at 11 AM on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Elderton Presbyterian Church, 115 North Main St., Elderton, PA, with the Rev. Edward Gray officiating.

Interment will be in Elderton Cemetery, Elderton, PA, where military honors will be presented by the American Legion Honor Guard.
