2020 WPIAL Playoffs – Pre-Game & Post-Game Guide

Match Confirmation      Please confirm all playoff matches with the partner(s) and the host school athletic director listed in the Arbiter. If you want to know who your line judges are for your matches, please contact Matt. Matt will provide you their names and contact information. Please arrive to the WPIAL match site 45 minutes prior to the scheduled match time. Please do not show up late.

Uniform    All uniforms must match each other. The referee will make the final decision on the uniform if all four officials have all three uniform options. The default uniform is black-and-white stripes with a collared shirt. Please pack all uniforms!

Line Judges   The referee should instruct all line judges about match protocols, signals, and mechanics along with match expectations. During timeouts, all line judges must stand at the attack line of their respective corner and on the same side of the referee stand. Please do not lean-on or circle the stand and chit-chat with the referee. The referee may discuss match information with the line judges during the timeouts, At the end of each set, the line judges should stand together behind the scorer’s table. Please do not interact with the table, the coaches, or the teams. The umpire may offer advice or information to the line judges in between sets, if needed.

Warm-Up   All warm-ups begin at the 30 minute mark. The WPIAL site coordinator should begin the pre-match conference by introducing the team coaches and captains to the referee and umpire. The coordinator should then overview the entire warmup protocol. This protocol should include the timing of the warmup along with specific times each team will take the court. The coordinator should answer any facility or procedure questions and then hand the match over to the referee.  The higher seed will select the side they will play on for the match while the lower seed will call the coin toss. The higher seed will call the coin toss if the match goes to a fifth set. The referee should discuss to the site coordinator how they plan on managing any unusual situations throughout the match.

Post-Match Protocol    The entre crew should leave the court and exit the facility together as a crew. You may ask the site coordinator for security to help you exit the court and facility, if the match has an intense ending. You may also ask the coordinator for a room to conduct a brief post-match conference. If there is not a conference room available, it is encouraged to have a post-match discussion in the parking lot away from spectators. The post-match conference should be less than 10 minutes and conducted by the referee. Please make your post-match conference a positive learning experience for the entire crew. The crew should discuss plays of interest, areas of improvement, and situations where the crew handled very well.

Match Report   A match report is not required by the WPIAL.  We hope this overview helps all of our playoff officials. All playoff assignments are a reward for your hard work, cooperation, and commitment to WPIAL volleyball. Best of luck to all officials and have fun on your assignments. Thank you!.
